Mesh or cable? How access points should connect

Every access point beyond the first has to get its data from somewhere. Either a cable brings it, or the unit uses its own radio to fetch it. That single choice drives most of the performance difference between installations.
The trade, plainly
A wireless access point talks to your devices and talks back to the router using the same radio hardware. Both jobs share one pool of capacity. Roughly speaking, a wirelessly-connected unit gives you around half the throughput of a wired one — and that's under good conditions.
Chain a second wireless unit behind the first and it halves again. Two hops out, you're at a quarter. This is why the far end of a large mesh network often feels no better than no mesh at all.
A cabled access point has no such problem. Its entire radio capacity goes to your devices. It's also immune to the interference that degrades wireless links, and it keeps working when a neighbour's new router lands on your channel.
When mesh is the right answer
- Rented property where you can't run cable.
- Single-storey homes where one extra unit covers the gap and there's a clear path between them.
- Detached spaces — a garage or ADU where trenching a cable costs more than the performance is worth.
- Temporary setups and anywhere you expect to move.
Mesh done well is genuinely good. The failure mode is mesh done thoughtlessly: units placed where the outlets are, too far apart, each one relaying to the next.
When to run the cable
- Two or more storeys, particularly with foil-backed insulation between floors.
- Anywhere you work. The desk you take calls from deserves a cable.
- More than two extra access points. Past that, wireless linking compounds badly.
- Homes with plaster or stucco, where the wireless link between units is fighting the same walls your devices are.
- Any business. If money depends on it, wire it.
Running cable is less disruptive than people fear
Most houses have paths already: attic space, crawlspaces, existing conduit, the route the cable company used, closet stacks that run floor to floor. A good installer finds these before proposing to cut anything, and shows you every hole before drilling it.
The cable itself should be Cat 6 or better. It carries both data and power, so an access point mounted on a ceiling needs only that one cable — no electrician, no outlet, nothing visible but the unit.
Where a cable genuinely isn't practical, the honest answer is to say so and place a wireless unit as close to the router as still solves the problem. Closer is better, always.
Placement beats hardware
A well-placed mid-range access point outperforms an expensive one in the wrong spot, reliably.
Central and high. Ceiling-mounted in the middle of the area it serves. Signal spreads outward and downward.
Not in the closet. The most common mistake. Hiding the unit inside a cabinet, behind the TV, or in a metal rack costs you a large share of its range.
Not next to the microwave, the cordless phone base, or the water heater. All of these interfere with 2.4 GHz.
Overlap deliberately. Coverage areas should overlap enough that a device moving between them has somewhere to go before it loses the first. Too little overlap and calls drop as you walk down the hall.
All of which is decided by measurement, not by guessing from a floor plan. Walk the space, take readings, then decide where units go.
